We are proud to present the 2022 Ultra Distance Scholarship!
We want to see the thing that we love (cycling, bikes, riding the bikes!) enjoyed by everyone. The wonderful world of cycling is not an inviting and accessible one for everyone. This scholarship was created to elevate representation in the discipline of Ultra Distance racing and to amplify conversations around the lack of diversity in the cycling world at large and hopefully inspire others in the industry to take initiative.
White supremacy does not only show up in overt forms, it trickles down quietly through systems that support white success at the expense of others. Those of us in positions of influence have the power to inspire change ♥
The scholarship is being hosted by Stayer Cycles (hi!). This year will see three recipients training for GBDURO for 10 months from November 2021-August 2022 under performance coach Alison of Veloqi.cc. Albion is kindly supporting the new mentorship program for this next year, in which Anisa Aubin, Natt Will, and Vera Ngosi-Sambrook (a scholarship alumni) will serve as mentors to the three recipients. Applications closed 15/10/2021 and the Ultra Distance Scholarship selection committee was led by coach Alison Wood alongside this year’s ultra legendary ultra mentors.
Aandy (aka Natty) is a self-proclaimed bike nerd and tinkerer from Brighton, UK. Earlier this year Natty completed a 3500km bike tour around the UK and can’t wait to saddle up again for his first ultra endurance adventure!
Zara is a recently qualified bike mechanic based in South London. She feels most at home in her tent while cooking all-the-veg on her camping stove somewhere wild mid-cycle tour. By borrowing a bivvy bag and other kit, she has recently begun to push herself to ride longer distances by riding through the night, as well as exploring gravel riding and bikepacking.
Carla lives in Sheffield, UK. She loves all things outdoors, including hiking, trail running and climbing, and is completely new to ultra distance events, and pretty new to cycling (she started road cycling during lockdown). She loves adventures and challenging herself.
And this year’s other awesome partners include Komoot, Pretty Decent Beer Company, The Racing Collective, Hope Tech, Teravail and Arundel.
Any questions can be directed to Taylor via email at taylor@stayercycles.com
All donations made here go directly towards componentry that cannot be made by Stayer or Hope and parts for the 3 recipient bikes, as well as other ultra racing equipment and kit
