Starting in the leafy suburbs of south east London, this route heads straight down to the coast. We wanted to try something new from the classic London to Brighton route that heads out via west. The good stuff starts once you hit West-Wickham and really ramps up as you tackle your first downs (The North Downs). Luckily this time you get to head down the infamous Titsey Hill (not up it). East Grinstead is your halfway marker and a good place to refuel before you hit the South Downs.
Once you start seeing signs for Plumpton its time to prepare yourself for a big climb (Plumpton Bostal) with an average gradient of 13% it's pretty spicy. But don't worry, the views from the top are wonderful and you will find yourself on the South Downs Way which is probably some of the best gravel riding in the South. And it's pretty much all down hill to the sea from here!! Be sure to complete your route with fish and chips on the beach!! YUM!!
We also made a little video to go with the route which you can watch here.
