The route heads out into West Sussex from Brighton, leaving the seaside for the South Downs National Park. Sticking to the A283, it passes through the grounds of the 17th century Petworth House, before turning off into Lurgashall, an idyllic English village complete with cricket ground and (open!) village stores. The route then takes you up Quell Lane, a Top 100 climb, maxing out at a stingy 22%. The descent is worth it though, snaking through the forest on a single track lane, down to Kingsley Green where you pick up the A283. The route then heads back through Midhurst, where if you’re lucky a coffee shop may be serving takeaways (and if not - there’s a Costa machine in the Tesco for those desperate enough!), before turning back out to the coast to finish up. This is a big day out, so make sure you've got lots of snacks a 2 full bottles.
